C.S. Lewis gave lectures on Faerie and Folklore at Oxford - Both he and his colleague J.R.R. Tolkien had a scholarly approach to folklore. For me, each image represents something a little deeper than what their outward appearance expresses - but I still enjoy painting them beautifully!
